Causes and Symptoms of a Root Canal
A root canal may be necessary due to a cracked tooth, deep cavity, repeated dental procedures, or dental trauma. If you’re experiencing any of these common symptoms, it’s time to seek a root canal:
- Severe tooth pain while eating
- Pressure on a tooth causing pain
- A pimple-like bump on the gum near the painful tooth
- Darkening of a tooth
- Swelling or tenderness near an aching tooth
While not all tooth pain indicates an infection, these symptoms are clear signs that a root canal is necessary.
What to Expect during a Root Canal
First, our experienced endodontist in NYC will use X-rays to locate the roots and identify the decay. This process may require slight discomfort from holding an appliance in your mouth, but there’s no pain involved.
Once we have a clear picture, we’ll apply a topical anesthetic to numb the gum before administering the main anesthetic. This is similar to what you would experience during a regular filling.
Next, we’ll create one or more openings in the tooth to remove the infected pulp and clean the roots. The open roots are then filled with a safe material called gutta-percha and sealed with cement. Finally, a temporary crown is placed while the permanent crown is being made.
